What Is Lime Mortar Repointing?

Repointing, also known as “Lime Pointing” or “Lime Mortar Pointing”. Lime Mortar Repointing is done when the mortar between the bricks is breaking down and “fretting” or decaying.

Over time, buildings become prone to wear and tear and they do need preservation to retain their structural integrity. When a building needs repointing, the use of lime products, either hydraulic or putty based is a must to correctly preserve the building. Using cement based mortars are far too hard and can damage masonry.

The most common causes of masonry damage is a combination of extreme weather conditions, excess moisture and a weak mortar mix causes masonry work and mortar to break down and fall out . Both bricks and mortar are subject to fretting or crumbling.

Lack of direct sunlight means that when water enters your masonry wall it takes very long periods of time to dry. During the cold winter months, water that gets into masonry walls can sometimes freeze and expand. This can cause brick faces to fall off, mortar joints to crack, or chimney columns to crack. This all requires repointing work.
